I'm really loving the Hobie. Decided to call her "Savage" since she's based on a traditional Polonesian boat used by savage cannibles. I challenged myself to do the entire Moorochy River, traversing mud flats, swamps, low bridges, strong currents, narrow passes and impenetrable forests on either shore. Mosquito swarms in Dunethin Swamp bit right through my cloths The mosquitoes were ridiculous. At sunset they formed clouds and there was no escape! Cloths did nothing to stop them. The bastards savaged me big time! I had to constantly switch between sailing, peddling and paddling as the nature of the river changed. Low power lines and extremely low bridges meant that my mast had to be dropped repeatedly. No place to get the boat ashore Wind and current were against me and my paddle broke so I had to abandon the attempt and failed to traverse the entire river. 7 hours on the water. A lap of Peel Island, Moreton Bay from Raby Bay with the SEQLD Island Club. Stopped over at the Teerk Roo Ra (Peel Island) Conservation Park. Got becalmed and had to paddle and pedal back, great cardio. Then a storm front came in and I had my first taste of strong winds, couldn't believe how fast the little Hobie went. Great fun! This machine rocks! When I first saw a Hobie Island I was seriously impressed how versatile and clever the concept is. Even 007 would love it! This is a cool boat that does everything and does it well. My friend Mark Sales owns one and uses it as a family boat. He raved about how good the Hobie is. 7 possible configurations: Touring paddle kayak A pedal kayak An outrigger A trimaran A fully rigged fast sail boat A sailboat with extra deck space for passengers A motorboat The Hobie can be used in small creeks, rivers, lakes and go out to sea in strong winds. It's surprisingly fast and I was able to keep pace with full rigged yachts when I went out to sea. It's set up allows me to sail it without extra crew, which is unusual for a sailing boat. Normally I think of Christmas parades as being a street march, but the floats in this parade actually float! The Sunshine Coast put on a good show with the Mooloolaba Christmas Boat Parade.

A belly bug stopped me eating for three days, but it didn't keep me from the gorgeous Sunshine Coast! On the way I discovered some of the great pleasures of travelling with a caravan. Rig loaded up and ready to roll! Being able to pull over in nice locations, then being able to make a hot coffee, cook a tasty meal and sleep on site! Rig pulled over in middle of nowhere for coffee and hot meal.
